ORANGEBURG, S.C. 鈥 The Our HBCUs Matter Foundation Inc. will recognize Angel E.R. Pointer, South Carolina State University鈥檚 director of customer service, with its Alumni Legacy Builder Award next week.

The will be held on Thursday, Sept. 4, 2025, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Atlanta 鈥 Windy Hill Ballpark in Atlanta. The awards shine a spotlight on the leaders, educators, alumni, and advocates whose dedication advances the mission of HBCUs.

鈥淎ngel Pointer has been consistent in her love for SC State and her willingness to put in the work for her university,鈥 SC State President Alexander Conyers said. 鈥淭his recognition underscores the value of that dedication, and we are pleased to see her honored among HBCU leaders across the nation.

鈥淚t is that same dedication that led us to entrust her with leading our newly established customer service efforts, a role critical to how we serve students, alumni and the community,鈥 Conyers said.

More than recognition, the Our HBCUs Matter Awards provide vital support for scholarships, academic programs, and leadership development for HBCU and high school students nationwide.

"This award is truly an honor,鈥 Pointer said. 鈥淭hrough my work and even with my fan I make sure my beloved SC State is always seen and heard, making sure to honor our past while building bridges for the next generation of Bulldogs."

Pointer is a third-generation Bulldog and proud 2012 SC State honors graduate with a degree in mathematics and a minor in computer science. She also earned her MBA in management with honors from Strayer University and holds Project Management Professional and SAFe 6 Scrum Master certifications.

She built a successful corporate career with Verizon Wireless, Lowe鈥檚 Corporate, and Wells Fargo before returning home to SC State. As director of alumni affairs and engagement, she brought a new vibe to traditions like helped pave the way for the MEAC Alumni Directors Award.

In 2025, Conyers selected her to be the university鈥檚 first director of customer service. She leads the Bulldog Excellence in Service initiative and the creation of the university鈥檚 first comprehensive customer service department aiming to establish SC State as the standard in collegiate excellence.

Pointer is deeply committed to alumni engagement. She is a life member of the SCSU National Alumni Association, serving as second vice president of the Charlotte Chapter. Locally, she has chaired the Technology, Gala Planning, and Membership Committees, and nationally she engages on multiple committees, chairing the Virtual Experience and Social Media Committees.

Her leadership has earned her numerous honors, including 2019 Charlotte Chapter Newcomer of the Year, 2022 SCSUNAA National Distinguished Young Alumnus of the Year, 2023 Charlotte Chapter Alumnus of the Year, and induction into the SCSU 40 Under 40 Class of 2025.

鈥淭here is not an airport I鈥檝e walked in without wearing something that boldly says SC State, and there is not a room I鈥檝e entered that I don鈥檛 speak her name,鈥 Pointer said.
